Eric Shatt grew up in Pennsylvania and graduated from New Mexico State University with a degree in Agriculture Biology. After hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2000 he started his own journey in farming. He worked for a few small organic farms before jumping into the world of viticulture and winemaking working for vineyards in the Finger Lakes region of central New York for over nine seasons. He also worked as Orchard Manager for Cornell University’s research orchard and vineyard in Ithaca, NY for 10 years. During this time Eric and his partner Deva started Redbyrd Orchard in 2003, a Biodynamic orchard and cidery where they grow along with their 3 sons, apples, pears, strawberries, geese and sheep in an attempt to harmoniously blend agriculture with the rhythms of nature and the cosmos. Redbyrd Orchard became Biodynamic Certified by Demeter in 2018. They recognize their farming activities take place on land taken from the *Hau-den-o’sau-nee* and strive for social justice and equity in community and agriculture.
